Non Profit vs. For Profit ( Jobs )

We've all heard about non profit and for profit jobs, but what exactly is the main distinction between them? Why does one individual seek a non profit career and another seek a for profit career? From the most basic top-level view, people in the non profit sector are typically more passionate and committed to a particular cause of the organization whereas people in the for profit sector are generally more concerned about the monetary and bottom line numbers of the organization. In the non profit arena, persons are attracted to these organizations because they feel that they are helping to make the world a better place, because they are committed to the cause of the organization or they have great personal interest in the cause and outreach of their organization. To contrast, persons in the for profit arena are primarily concerned about the volume of sales and revenues of the company and are always looking for ways to improve it.

The non profit sector mostly includes public, private, or government organizations that provide services without an expectation of financial exchange. Examples include schools, churches or a shelter for homeless persons. Non profits are typically categorized by those organizations that serve its members, such as professional associations, and those organizations that serve the public, including religious, charitable, and social welfare organizations.

Transition Into the Non Profit Sector

For individuals who've spent most of their career in the for profit corporate world, transitioning to the non profit sector can be quite a challenge as there is a big paradigm change in organizational culture and workplace dynamics. It's important to understand that non profits are mission-focused vs. revenue-focused and that there would need to be an adjustment in how to measure the success of the organization. Non profits are typically constrained with financial resources as they depend on grants, program fees and donations to cover expenses. Additionally, non profits are typically slower to make decisions as they are more process-oriented with a board of directors. This can be frustrating to individuals from the for profit industry where decisions are typically made much more quickly based upon financial data. With the differences between the corporate, for profit world and the non profit arena, it's important to consider these specific factors into consideration before transitioning into the non-profit sector.
